Mark 9

And he said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will absolutely not taste death until they see that the Kingdom of God has come with power.”

The Transfiguration

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them by themselves up onto a high mountain. And he was transformed in front of them,
and his clothes became radiant—exceedingly white—beyond what any launderer on earth could whiten them.
And Elijah appeared to them, along with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
And Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents: one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
For he did not know what to say because they were terrified.
Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
And suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus only.
And as they were coming down from the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from among the dead.
And they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what it meant “to rise from among the dead.”
And they asked him, saying, “Why do the experts in the law say that Elijah must come first?”
And he said to them, “Indeed, Elijah does come first to restore all things. And yet, why is it written about the Son of Man that he must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
But I say to you that ‘Elijah’ has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written about him.”

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

And when they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and experts in the law disputing with them.
And immediately when the entire crowd saw him, they were very excited, and ran to him and greeted him.
And he asked them, “What are you disputing with them about?”
And one person from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, who has a spirit that makes him mute,
and whenever it takes hold of him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and he becomes rigid. And I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they were not strong enough.”
And he answered them and said, “O unbelieving generation, how much longer will I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”
And they brought the boy to him, and when the spirit saw him, immediately it threw the boy into a convulsion, and after he fell on the ground he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.
And he asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “Since he was a child.”
And often it has thrown him both into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
And Jesus said to him, “What do you mean, ‘If you are able to?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.”
Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe! Help my unbelief!”
And when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering around him, he subdued the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter into him again.”
And after crying out and throwing him into a violent convulsion, he came out. And the boy appeared as if he were dead, so that most of them said, “He is dead.”
But Jesus, taking him by the hand, lifted him up and he stood up.
And when he had come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”
And he said to them, “This kind of spirit cannot come out by anything except prayer.”

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

They departed from there and passed through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know
because he was teaching his disciples and saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and after he is killed, three days later he will rise from the dead.”
But they did not understand the saying and were afraid to ask him.

Who Is the Greatest?

And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?”
But they remained silent because on the road they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.
And after sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
And he took a little child and set him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,
“Whoever receives a child like this one in my name receives me; and whoever receives me does not receive only me, but also the one who sent me.”

Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and tried to stop him because he was not following us.”
But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, because there is no one who will do a miracle in my name and then will soon afterward be able to speak evil of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us.
For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will absolutely not lose his reward.

Temptations to Sin

“And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away, it would be better for him if a huge millstone was hung around his neck and he was thrown into the lake.
“And if your hand causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life in the age to come maimed than to have two hands and go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire.
[[Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.]]
And if your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life in the age to come lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into Gehenna.
[[Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.]]
And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter into the Kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into Gehenna,
where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.
For everyone will be salted with fire.
Salt is good, but if the salt has become unsalty, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
