After these things I saw another angel coming down out of heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory.
And he cried with a mighty voice, saying, “Fallen, fallen, is Babylon the great, and has become a dwelling place of demons, and a haunt of every unclean spirit, and a dwelling place for every unclean and hateful bird.
For by the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality all the nations have fallen, and the kings of the earth committed sexual immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have become wealthy by the power of her profligate luxuries.”
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “Come out of her, my people, so that you have no fellowship with her sins, and so that you do not receive her plagues,
for her sins have reached even to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
Render to her just as she rendered, and double to her the double according to her works. In the cup that she mingled, mingle to her double.
To whatever extent she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, give her a like measure of torment and mourning, for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as a queen, and am not a widow, and will absolutely not see mourning.’
Therefore in one day her plagues will come; death, and mourning, and famine, and she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judged her.
“And the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in excessive luxury with her will cry and wail over her when they look at the smoke of her burning,
standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘How terrible, how terrible it will be for the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’
“And the merchants of the earth cry and mourn over her, for no one buys their cargo any more,
cargo of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all your citron wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of the most precious wood, and of bronze, and iron, and marble,
and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and perfume, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep, and cargo of horses and chariots, and “bodies,” (that is slaves, the souls of human beings).
And the fruit that your soul lusted after has gone away from you, and all the things that were luxurious and sumptuous have perished from you, no more, never, to be found again.
The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, crying and mourning and
saying, ‘How terrible, how terrible it will be for the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearl!
For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.’ “And every ship captain, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far off
and cried out as they looked at the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What city is like the great city?’
And they threw dust on their heads, and were crying out, crying and mourning, saying, ‘How terrible, how terrible it will be for the great city, by which all who had their ships in the sea became rich from her wealth! For in one hour she has been made desolate.’
Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy ones, and you apostles, and you prophets, for God has judged her because of her judgment of you.”
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a large millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “Thus with a mighty fall will Babylon, the great city, be thrown down, and will absolutely not be found any more at all.
And the voice of harpers and minstrels and flute players and trumpeters will absolutely not be heard any more at all in you, and not any craftsman, of whatever craft, will be found any more in you at all, and the sound of a grain mill will absolutely not be heard at all any more in you,
and the light of a lamp will absolutely not shine any more at all in you, and the voice of the groom and of the bride will absolutely not be heard any more in you at all, because your merchants were the great ones of the earth and because by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.
And in her was found the blood of prophets and of holy ones, and of all who have been slain on the earth.”
