Psalms 140

Deliver Me, O Lord, from Evil Men

Deliver me, O Yahweh, from evil people; guard me from the man of violent deeds,
those who devise evil things in their heart; every day they stir up wars.
They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent; a viper’s poison is under their lips. Selah.
Keep me, O Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked person; guard me from the man of violent deeds, those who devise how to trip up my feet.
The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the path; they have set snares for me. Selah.
I said to Yahweh, “You are my God.” Give ear, O Yahweh, to the sound of my supplications for favor!
O Yahweh, the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant, O Yahweh, the desires of the wicked person. Do not cause what he devises to succeed, or he will become arrogance. Selah.
As for the heads of those who surround me, let the trouble caused by their own lips cover them.
Let burning coals fall upon them; may he cast them into the fire, may they never arise from among the watery pits.
Do not let a slanderer be established in the earth; may evil hunt the man of violence, to knock him down.
I know that Yahweh will maintain the just cause of the afflicted person— judgment for the needy.
Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name; the upright will dwell in your presence.
