Matthew 4

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the desert to be tempted by the Devil.
And after he had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.
And the Tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”
But he answered and said, “It is written: Man cannot live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Then the Devil took him into the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the Temple
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and, They will lift you up with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written: Do not test the Lord your God.
Again, the Devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,
and he said to him, “I will give all these things to you if you will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Adversary! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.
Then the Devil left him, and behold, angels came and began ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.
And he left Nazareth and went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the lake, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
with the result that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled, saying,
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, along the Road of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and on those who sat in the region and shadow of death, a light has dawned on them.
From that time on Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has drawn near.”

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

And as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen.
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will have you fish for people.”
And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
And going on from there, he saw two other brothers—James the son of Zebedee and John his brother—mending their nets in a boat with Zebedee their father, and he called them.
And immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

And Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
And the news about him spread throughout all Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick: those suffering from various diseases and severe pain, those who were being afflicted by demons, people with epilepsy, and people who were paralyzed; and he healed them.
And large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
