Matthew 19

Teaching About Divorce

And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee and came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan,
and large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
And some Pharisees came to him, testing him, and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”
And he answered and said, “Have you not read that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female?
And he said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together no human is to separate.”
They say to him, “Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
He said to them, “Moses, in view of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been this way.
And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
The disciples say to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it has been given.
For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”

Let the Children Come to Me

Then little children were brought to him so that he could lay his hands on them and pray, and the disciples rebuked them.
But Jesus said, “Allow the little children and do not hinder them from coming to me, because the Kingdom of God belongs to people who are like these children.”
And, having laid his hands on them, he departed from there.

The Rich Young Man

And look! A man came to him and said, “Teacher, what good thing must I do in order to have life in the age to come?”
And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about that which is good? There is One who is good. But if you want to enter into life in the age to come, keep the commandments.”
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness,
honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.
The young man said to him, “All these things I have kept, what do I still lack?”
Jesus said to him, “If you really want to reach the goal, go, sell your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. And come, follow me.”
But the young man, when he heard these words, went away grieved because he had many possessions.
And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I say to you, how difficult it will be for a rich person to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God.”
And when the disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”
And looking at them, Jesus said to them, “This is impossible for people, but for God all things are possible.”
Then Peter answered and said to him, “Look! We have left everything and followed you, so what will we have?”
And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed me, in the New Beginning, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit life in the age to come.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.
