Matthew 17

The Transfiguration

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John, and led them by themselves up onto a high mountain.
And he was transformed before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became white as the light.
And Look! Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him.
And Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three tents here: one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
And Jesus came and when he touched them, he said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.”
And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.
And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Do not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from among the dead.”
And his disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the experts in the law say that Elijah must come first?”
And he answered and said, “Indeed, ‘Elijah is coming and will restore all things,’
but I say to you, that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him, but did to him whatever they wanted. So also the Son of Man will suffer by them.”
Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

And when they came to the crowd, a man came to him, kneeling down before him, saying,
“Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic and suffers grievously, for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.
And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to cure him.”
And Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and twisted generation, how much longer will I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.”
And Jesus subdued him, and the demon came out of him. And the boy was cured from that hour.
Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”
And he said to them, “Because of your little trust. For truly I say to you, if you have trust like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible to you.”
[[But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.]]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be handed over into the hands of men,
and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised from the dead.” And they were deeply grieved.

The Temple Tax

And when they came to Capernaum, those who received the two drachma Temple tax came to Peter and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the two drachma tax?”
He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? The kings of the earth, from whom do they receive customs or poll tax? From their sons, or from others?”
And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Therefore the sons are free.
But lest we cause them to fall, go to the lake and cast in a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up, and when you have opened his mouth, you will find a silver stater coin. Take that and give it to them for you and me.”
