Now it came to pass that he was passing through the grainfields on a Sabbath. And his disciples were picking the heads of grain and, rubbing them in their hands, were eating them.
But certain of the Pharisees said, “Why do all of you do that which it is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”
And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not read that which David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
how he went into the house of God and took and ate the Bread of the Presence, and also gave some to those who were with him, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?”
And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
And it came to pass on another Sabbath, that he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there, and his right hand was shriveled up.
Now the experts in the law and the Pharisees were watching him closely—if he would heal on the Sabbath—so that they could find a reason to accuse him.
But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had his hand withered, “Get up and stand in the midst of the people.” And after rising up he stood there.
And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?”
And looking around at them all, and said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did, and his hand was restored.
But they were filled with irrational anger, and discussed with one another what they could do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called his disciples, and he chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:
Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude
And he came down with them and stood on a level place. And a great multitude of his disciples and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,
who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases, and those who were troubled with unclean spirits, were healed.
And the whole crowd was trying to touch him because power was coming from him, and he was healing them all.
The Beatitudes
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, because the Kingdom of God is yours.
“Blessed are you who hunger now, because you will be filled. “Blessed are you who cry now, because you will laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, and insult you, and denounce your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because your reward in heaven is great, for their fathers did the same things to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
“But how terrible it will be for you who are rich, because you are receiving your comfort now.
“How terrible it will be for you who are satisfied now, because you will hunger. “How terrible it will be for you who are laughing now, because you will mourn and cry.
“How terrible it will be for you, when all people speak well of you, for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
“But I say to you who are listening: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To whoever strikes you on the cheek, offer the other cheek also, and from him who takes away your outer garment do not withhold your tunic also.
Give to everyone who asks you, and from the one who takes away your things do not demand them back.
And just as you want people to treat you, treat them the same way.
“And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
And if you lend to those of whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive the same amount.
But love your enemies, and do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
“And do not judge and you will absolutely not be judged, and do not condemn and you will absolutely not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Give, and it will be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, they will give into your lap. For by the standard with which you measure, it will be measured to you in return.”
And he also spoke a parable to them, “Are the blind able to guide the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?
The disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
“Why do you see the splinter that is in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Neighbor, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter that is in your neighbor’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
“For there is no good tree that produces corrupt fruit, nor on the other hand, a corrupt tree that produces good fruit.
For each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
The good man out of the good treasures of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasures brings out that which is evil, for his mouth speaks things that overflow from his heart.
Build Your House on the Rock
“And why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things that I say?
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you whom he is like.
He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the river crashed against that house but was not strong enough to shake it, because it had been well built.
But whoever hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation. When the river crashed against it, immediately it fell down, and the ruin of that house was great.”
