Luke 4

And Jesus, full of holy spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led around in the desert by spirit

for 40 days, being tempted by the Devil. And he ate nothing in those days, and when they were completed, he was hungry.

And the Devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

And Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man cannot live on bread alone.”

And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in a moment of time.

And the Devil said to him, “To you I will give all this authority, and their glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.

Therefore, if you will bow down in worship before me, it will all be yours.”

And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”

And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the Temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,

for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,

and, They will lift you up with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said: Do not test the Lord your God.”

And when the Devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him for a season.

And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee, and news about him went out through all the surrounding area.

And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as his custom was he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

And he was given the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. And he unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down, and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.

And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.”

And they all were giving a good testimony about him, and were amazed at the words of grace that proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

And he said to them, “Doubtless you will speak this parable to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’”

And he said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

But truly I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land,

and yet to none of them was Elijah sent, but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

And there were many people with skin diseases in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

And when they heard these things, everyone in the synagogue was filled with rage,

and they got up and threw him out of the city. And they brought him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on in order to throw him down the cliff.

But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way.

And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath day,

and they were astonished at his teaching, because his word had authority.

And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit, (that is to say an unclean demon), and he cried out with a loud voice,

“Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you, who you are—the Holy One of God.”

And Jesus subdued him, saying, “Be bound!” and “Come out of him!” And after the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

And they were all amazed, and continued talking together to each other, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”

And news concerning him went out into every place in the surrounding area.

And he got up and went out of the synagogue and went into the house of Simon. And Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him on her behalf.

And he stood over her and subdued the fever, and it left her, and immediately she got up and began to serve them.

And when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.

And demons also came out from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God.” And he, subduing them, did not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

And when it was day, he came out and went into a solitary place. And the multitudes were searching for him and came to him, and were trying to keep him from going away from them.

But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God in the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”

And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
