Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover.
And the chief priests and the experts in the law were looking for a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the people.
Judas to Betray Jesus
And the Adversary entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, who was one of the number of the Twelve.
And he went away, and discussed with the chief priests and Temple commanders how he could betray him to them.
And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.
And he consented, and began seeking an opportunity to betray him to them without a crowd present.
The Passover with the Disciples
And the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover had to be sacrificed.
And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us to eat.”
And they said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
And he said to them, “Listen! When you have entered the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters.
And you will say to the head of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
And he will show you a large, furnished, upper room. Prepare the meal there.”
And they left, and found everything just as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
Institution of the Lord's Supper
And when the hour had come, he reclined to eat, and the apostles with him.
And he said to them, “With great desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
because I say to you, I will absolutely not eat it again until it has been fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves,
for I say to you, I will absolutely not drink of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes.”
And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
And in the same way he took the cup after they ate, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
“But Look! The hand of the one betraying me is with me on the table.
For indeed, the Son of Man will go to die as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!”
And they began to dispute among themselves as to which of them it could be who was about to do this thing.
Who Is the Greatest?
And there also arose a contention among them as to which of them was regarded to be greatest.
And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles use their position over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘Philanthropists.’
But you—not so! On the contrary, he who is the greatest among you, let him become as the youngest, and he who is the leader, as he who serves.
For who is greater, the one who is reclining to eat, or the one who serves? Isn’t it the one who is reclining to eat? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves.
“But you are those who have continued with me in my temptations,
and I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred it on me,
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
“Simon, Simon, Look! The Adversary demanded permission to have you all, so that he could sift you like wheat,
but I implored God for you, Simon, that your trust would not fail. And you, when once you have turned back in repentance, strengthen your brothers.”
And he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
And he said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”
Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus
And he said to them, “When I sent you all out without purse, and wallet, and sandals, did you lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.”
And he said to them, “But now, he who has a purse, let him take it, and likewise his provision bag; and let the one who has no sword sell his outer garment and buy one.
For I say to you, it is necessary that this which is written is fulfilled in me, and he was counted with the lawless, for that which refers to me is being fulfilled.”
And they said, “Lord, see, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “Enough of that!”
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
And he came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him.
And when he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you do not enter into temptation.”
And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw away, and he knelt down and prayed,
saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let not my will, but your will, be done.”
[[And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down on the ground.]]
And when he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, beingexhausted from sorrow,
and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray so that you do not enter into temptation.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
While he was still speaking, look, a crowd was coming. And the one called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. And he drew near to Jesus to kiss him,
but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”
And a certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
But Jesus answered and said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear, and healed him.
And Jesus said to the chief priests, and commanders of the Temple, and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as if I were a criminal, with swords and clubs?
When I was daily with you in the Temple, you did not stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the authority of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus
And they seized him and led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance.
And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat in the midst of them.
And a certain servant girl, when she noticed him as he sat in the light of the fire, she stared at him and said, “This man was also with him.”
But he denied it, saying, “Ma’am, I do not know him.”
And after a little while someone else saw him and said, “You are also one of them.” But Peter said, “Sir, I am not.”
And after the space of about one hour another confidently affirmed, saying, “Truly, this man was also with him, because he is a Galilean.”
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the words of the Lord, how he said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”
And he went outside the courtyard, and cried bitterly.
Jesus Is Mocked
And the men who held Jesus mocked him, and beat him.
And they blindfolded him and asked him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is he who struck you?”
And they spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
Jesus Before the Council
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the People gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law, and they led him away into their Sanhedrin chamber, saying,
“If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will absolutely not believe,
and if I ask you, you will absolutely not answer.
But from now on the Son of Man will be sitting at the right hand of the power of God.”
And they all said, “Then are you the Son of God?” And he said to them, “You say correctly that I am.”
And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.”
