Leviticus 4

Laws for Sin Offerings

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, if anyone sins unintentionally in any of the things that Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them—
“If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer to Yahweh a young bull without blemish as a sin offering for his sin that he has sinned.
He is to bring the bull to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh, and he must lay his hand on the head of the bull and kill the bull before Yahweh.
Then the anointed priest is to take some of the blood of the bull and bring it into the Tent of Meeting.
The priest is to dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before Yahweh, in front of the curtain of the Holy of Holies.
Then the priest is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before Yahweh that is in the Tent of Meeting. Then he is to pour out all of the rest of the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
Then he is to remove all the fat of the bull of the sin offering, the fat that covers the innards and all the fat that is on the innards,
and the two kidneys and the fat that is on them, that is by the loins, and the lobe of the liver, with the kidneys, he is to remove,
(just as it is removed from the bull of the sacrifice of peace offerings), and the priest is to burn them into smoke on the altar of burnt offering.
The bull’s skin, all its flesh, with its head and with its legs, its innards, and its dung,
even all the rest of the bull he must carry forth outside the camp to a clean place where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire. It is to be burned where the ashes are poured out.
“If the whole congregation of Israel sins and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done one of the things that Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and are guilty,
when the sin in which they have sinned is known, then the assembly must offer a young bull for a sin offering and bring it before the Tent of Meeting.
The elders of the congregation are to lay their hands on the head of the bull before Yahweh, and the bull is to be killed before Yahweh.
The anointed priest will bring of the blood of the bull to the Tent of Meeting,
and the priest is to dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before Yahweh, before the curtain.
He is to put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before Yahweh that is in the Tent of Meeting, and all the rest of the blood he must pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering that is at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
All its fat he is to take from it and burn it into smoke on the altar.
And he is to do with the bull as he did with the bull of the sin offering; he is to do the same with this. Thus the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.
He will carry the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.
“When a leader sins unintentionally by doing any one of all the things that Yahweh his God has commanded not to be done, and he becomes guilty,
if his sin in which he has sinned is made known to him, he is to bring as his approach offering a goat, a male without blemish.
He is to lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before Yahweh. It is a sin offering.
The priest must take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. He must pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
All its fat he must burn into smoke on the altar like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest will make atonement for him concerning his sin and he will be forgiven.
“And if one person of the common people sins unintentionally by doing one of the things that Yahweh his God has commanded not to be done, and becomes guilty,
if his sin which he has sinned is made known to him, then he is to bring for his approach offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin that he has sinned.
He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering.
The priest is to take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and the rest of its blood he is to pour out at the base of the altar.
All its fat he is to remove like the fat is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest is to burn it into smoke on the altar for a soothing aroma to Yahweh, and the priest will make atonement for him and he will be forgiven.
“If he brings a lamb as his approach offering for a sin offering, he is to bring a female without blemish.
He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.
The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and all the rest of its blood he is to pour out at the base of the altar.
All its fat he is to remove, like the fat of the lamb is removed from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest will burn them into smoke on the altar for an offering to Yahweh made by fire; and the priest will make atonement for him concerning his sin that he has sinned, and he will be forgiven.”
