John 12

Then six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from among the dead.

So they made him a supper there, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those who was reclining to eat with him.

Then Mary, having taken three quarters of a pound of expensive perfume made from pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one about to betray him), said,

“Why wasn’t this perfume sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?”

(Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, he used to steal from what was put in it).

Therefore Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this until now for the day of my burial,

for the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.”

Then a large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, and they came, not only for Jesus’ sake, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from among the dead.

But the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well,

because on account of him many of the Jews were deserting them and were believing in Jesus.

On the next day a large crowd that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and they cried out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!”

And Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it, just as it is written,

Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion. Look! Your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.

(His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him).

Meanwhile the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from among the dead continued to testify about him.

For this reason the crowd went and met him, because they heard that he had done this sign.

Therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you are not accomplishing anything! Look! The world has gone after him.”

Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to Jerusalem to worship at the feast.

So they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Lord, we want to see Jesus.”

Philip went and told Andrew. Andrew went, and Philip, and they told Jesus.

And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it lives by itself alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

Whoever is overly attached to his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it, resulting in life in the age to come.

If anyone serves me, let him follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

“Now my soul has become troubled. And yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour?’ But it was for this purpose I came to this hour.

Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

Therefore the crowd that stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for my sake, but for your sakes.

Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

(Now he said this, clearly indicating what kind of death he was about to die).

So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ will remain forever, and so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up?’ Who is this Son of Man?”

Therefore Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtakes you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and then he departed and hid himself from them.

But although he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him,

with the result that the word of Isaiah the prophet that he spoke was fulfilled: Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

For this reason they were not able to believe, for again Isaiah said,

He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and would return to God, and I would heal them.

Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory, and he spoke of him.

Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it so that they would not be put out of the synagogue,

for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus had cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but also in him who sent me.

And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.

I have come into the world as a light so that whoever believes in me will not remain in the darkness.

And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him, for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

Whoever is rejecting me and is not receiving my words has one that is judging him: the word that I spoke, it will judge him on the last day.

For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me, he has given me a command as to what to say and what to speak.

And I know that his commandment is life in the age to come, so whatever I say, I say just as the Father has said to me.”
