“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you, and he gives you a sign or a wonder,
and he says, ‘Let’s go after other gods,’ that you have not known, ‘and let’s serve them,’ and the sign or the wonder comes to pass about which he spoke to you,
you are not to listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams, for Yahweh your God is testing you to know whether you love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
You must walk after Yahweh your God and fear him, and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you must serve him and cling to him.
That prophet or that dreamer of dreams must be put to death, because he has spoken rebellion against Yahweh your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to draw you aside out of the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to walk in. So you must put away the evil from the midst of you.
“If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying, ‘Let’s go and serve other gods,’ that you have not known, you nor your fathers,
of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near to you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth,
you must not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye is not to pity him. You are not to spare him, and you must not conceal him,
but you are to kill, yes, kill him; your hand is to be first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.
You are to stone him to death with stones, because he has sought to draw you away from Yahweh your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
All Israel will hear and fear and will not do any more such wickedness as this is in the midst of you.
“If you hear that in one of your cities that Yahweh your God is giving to you to live there, anyone saying that
‘Certain men, sons of Belial, have gone out from among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, “Let’s go and serve other gods,”’ (gods that you have not known),
then you are to inquire, and make a search, and ask diligently and, behold, if it is true and the thing is established that such an abomination has been done among you,
you must surely strike the inhabitants of that city with the mouth of the sword, destroying it completely and everyone who is in it, and its livestock, with the mouth of the sword.
You are to gather all its spoil into the middle of its city square and are to burn the city and all its spoil with fire as a whole burnt offering to Yahweh your God, and it must be a mound of ruins forever; it is not to be built again.
Nothing of the devoted thing is to cling to your hand so that Yahweh will turn from the fierceness of his anger and show you mercy and have compassion on you, and multiply you as he has sworn to your fathers
because you have listened to the voice of Yahweh your God, keeping all his commandments that I command you this day, to do what is right in the eyes of Yahweh your God.”
