My little children, I write these things to you so that you will not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate who pleads our case to the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.
And this is how we know that we have come to know him: if we keep his commandments.
Whoever says, “I have come to know him,” and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
But whoever keeps his word, in this person the love of God has truly been perfected. This is how we know that we are in union with him:
the one who says he remains in union with him is obligated to walk just as he walked.
The New Commandment
Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you heard.
On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you because the darkness is passing away and the true light already shines.
Whoever says he is in the light and yet hates his brother or sister is still in the darkness.
Whoever loves his brothers and sisters remains in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.
But whoever hates his brother or sister is in the darkness and walks in the darkness and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
I am writing to you, O children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
I am writing to you, O fathers, because you have known him from the beginning. I am writing to you, O young men, because you have conquered the Wicked One. I have written to you, O little children, because you have known the Father.
I have written to you, O fathers, because you have known him from the beginning. I have written to you, O young men, because you are strong and the word of God remains in you and you have conquered the Wicked One.
Do Not Love the World
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Because all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in one’s lifestyle—is not of the Father but is of the world.
And the world is passing away, and also its desires, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
Warning Concerning Antichrists
O little children, it is the last hour, and just as you heard that an antichrist is coming, and already many antichrists have come, and so we know that it is the last hour.
They went out from us, but they were not really from us; for if they had been from us, they would have remained with us. But they went out with the result that it was revealed that none of them are from us.
And you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
Who is the liar if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son.
Everyone who denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.
As for you, that which you have heard from the beginning must remain in you! If what you have heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he himself promised us: life in the age to come.
I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
And as for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, and you do not need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you remain in him.
Children of God
And now, O children, remain in him, so that when he appears, we will have confidence and not shrink back in shame from him at his coming.
If you have known that he is righteous, you also know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
